The four magazine pages offered here came from a February 12, 1951 issue of LIFE magazine. I wasn’t able to save the damaged magazine, but I did save this wonderful article and excellent photos. The article is titled “Fight Trainer” and is one of the Photo Essays that occasionally appeared in issues of LIFE. The fight-training business is a grubby one and it takes place in a grubby environment, Stillman’s Gym in New York. The essay’s hero, Charles Goldman, is a rough little man, but a nice one, who just happens to be a genius at what he does. In 1936 there appeared the most famous declaration of intent that has ever been articulated for a magazine: “To see life; to see the world; to eyewitness great events; to watch the faces of the poor and the gestures of the proud; to see strange things — machines, armies, multitudes, shadows in the jungle and on the moon…”. The first issue of LIFE contained the first photo essay in the form known today. In the years that followed LIFE delivered on all the promises listed in the manifesto — including pictures of shadows taken on the moon — and in the process developed the photo essay to limits undreamed by its pioneers. The above information appeared in a 1978 hardback book titled “GREAT PHOTOGRAPHIC ESSAYS from LIFE.” It contained twenty-two of the most eloquent photographic stories from the world’s most important picture magazine. One included in this book was titled “FIGHT TRAINER.” Along with each story was an introduction on that specific photo essay. I have included a copy of that page which goes into excellent detail about the reasons and information on this specific essay and its history, photographer, and more. By reading this single page, the appreciation and respect for both the fight trainer and photograper increases dramatically. FIGHT TRAINER appeared on pages 110 through 116 of the LIFE magazine. No other seller on eBay is offering this photo essay article, nor the additional information from the book mentioned. The magazine pages are in overall good condition. Paper has yellowed with age. I trimmed the edges that was stapled into the magazine. Pages included are double-side pages 109-110; 111-112; 113-114; 115-116. Pages 109 has an unrelated ad. I’ll place the magazine pages inside a plastic sleeve and secure between two pieces of white foam board. The copy of the FIGHT TRAINER essay information will also be included inside the plastic sleeve. Mailing will be by USPS First Class Mail in a bubble envelope.
