The Hartford Circus Fire of July 6, 1944 remains one of the deadliest fire disasters in United States history. The blaze spread with terrifying speed, engulfing the tent in minutes while an estimated 6,000 to 8,000 spectators were inside.
The circus paid out millions in claims to victims and their families. The Hartford fire effectively ended the era of the large canvas big top tent circus – Ringling Bros. moved to arena-only performances in the years that followed.
