Signed “(c) Wm Messner-Loebs ’83”.-Description: This is the original artwork for the rear cover from Journey comic book issue #5 featuring Joshua Wolverine MacAlistaire by William “Bill” Messner-Loebs (b. 1949). This page was originally published as the rear cover of issue #5 of the comic book Journey (Aardvark-Vanaheim 1983). The comic book Journey told the adventures of Joshua “Wolverine” MacAlistaire, a frontiersman, guide, trapper and explorer of the Old Northwest Territory in the early 19th century. The comic book was described as follows in house ads: “Life on the Michigan frontier was filled with Adventure, Fear, Battle, Murder and Death…and then there were the Bad Days.” The comic book ran for 27 issues published by Aardvark-Vanaheim and Fantagraphics from 1983-1986. The comic book related the tales of Wolverine MacAlistaire and his encounters and adventures with various (and many unfriendly) animals, French and British soldiers and spies, Native Americans, settlers, other frontiersmen, and an assortment of bizarre characters seeking fulfillment in the wilderness. The sequel (sadly, never completed as only 2 books of a planned 6 issue series were published) Journey: War-Drums, tells of the War of 1812 in the Northwest frontier. This rear cover, featuring imagery from the story titled “Fitzhugh Lives in the Woods” features Herbert, the 3rd Earl of George, and his Canadian “troops” (Locksley, Flynn and Huntington). Herbert is on the American frontier on a British secret mission to foster rebellion. You can guess how this ends up. A wonderful example of Messner-Loeb’s artistry from early in the run of this classic comic book. A well designed and beautifully drawn (the inks are superb) rear cover page featuring supporting characters of his signature character by long-time comic book writer and artist, Bill Messner-Loebs. BIE Condition: -The art is in excellent overall condition. Minor age and handling wear. Pencil notes to reverse. Comic has not been graded by Third Party Graders (i.e. CGC,CBCS,etc.). All grades are based solely on my opinion and 25 years worth of experience. Very rarely will we list anything above a 9.2. I have graded this to the best of my ability using over 25 years of experience.
Here, Josh agrees to attempt a rescue (his incentive is a rescue of Jemmy Acorn, a Johnny Appleseed-type character who has been captured by the Hurons), but first, he has to get through Red Sticks (who wants to be the “hero” who rescues Riverwind).
2-volume set from IDw publishing reprints complete run of Journey, published by Aardvark-Vanaheim and then Fantagraphics from 1983-1988, plus early stories that ran in Cerebus. All B&W, excellent, like new books.
