When one BF2C-1 disintegrated in flight early in 1935, the Navy pulled the type out of service. The first Chinese fighter pilot to shoot down a Japanese aircraft, Major Kao Chi-hang, did so from the cockpit of a Curtiss Hawk III biplane.
